Pet First-Aid Basics: What to Do Before the Ambulance Arrives

In an emergency, the minutes before professional help arrives can make all the difference. Staying calm and knowing a few basic steps can keep your pet stable until a pet ambulance reaches you. Here's a practical, no-panic guide.

1. Keep yourself safe first

Even the gentlest pet may bite or scratch when frightened or in pain. Approach slowly, speak softly, and if needed, use a folded towel or a makeshift muzzle (never on a vomiting or choking animal).

2. Control bleeding

Apply firm, steady pressure with a clean cloth or gauze. Don't keep lifting it to check — hold for at least 3–5 minutes. If blood soaks through, add another layer on top instead of removing the first.

3. Choking

If your pet is pawing at their mouth and struggling to breathe, open the mouth and look for a visible object. Only remove it if you can do so without pushing it further down. For small pets, hold them with the head pointed down; for larger dogs, a gentle Heimlich-style thrust just below the ribcage can help.

4. Heatstroke

Move your pet to shade immediately. Wet them with cool (not ice-cold) water, especially the belly and paws, and offer small sips of water. Heatstroke is a true emergency — call for help right away.
